This will be the first of that series of posts explaining why I enjoy strongman. I keep getting well meaning people saying things like, "I hear you are into toughman", or "So, do you hold back airplanes with your teeth?", or "how many blocks of ice can you break with your head?". Let me define the difference between Strongman and Toughman. Toughman tends to be more of a spectacle. Not that it is not impressive, but it is still more of the side show, slight of hand spectacle. Strongman is a competitive sport. It combines skill, athletic ability, and brute strength into a series of highly challenging and unique athletic events. The reason I enjoy it so much is the competitiveness of it. I've played many sports recreationally; Basketball, football, volleyball, softball, and even wrestling; But strongman is totally different. It is in a league all its own. Part of it is that there aren't millions of people doing this. In my area there are very few, so, in a way it is fun being a part of something that relatively few others can do. Another reason is I just love athletic power sports. Pushing the human body to the limits of physical ability. Pushing the threshold of power and pain and winning because of it. All for just seeing if you can do it. It is a rush and such a sense of accomplishment.
(by the way, that is not me in the photo - yet)
