Bench Max Day!

Today began our max week. Today was bench, Wednesday is squats, and Friday is dead lift. So far we have had a great time maxing out even if the weight being put up left something to be desired.

Alan started us off and I spotted for him right through to his 1Rm. He was hoping for 170#. He started with a warm up at 155# and I jumped him to 175n right away - no problem. Next was 185# which he did very well. Then up to 190# which proved to be tough but he locked out one rep on his first attempt. I jumped him up to 205#. 205# Proved too much and we backed off to 195# which Alan just missed on his second attempt. I shouldn't have jumped to 205# so quickly, he might have gotten 195#. At any rate Alan was happy and I was impressed with his progress.

Next up, the strongman-in-training. After a brief warm up I started my maxing session with a few sets of 225#. From 225# I went right to 250# which went up fairly well, and beat my last max from early October by 10#. I struggled under 265# but was able to lock it out. Up to 270#. That 5# increase proved a real challenge and I could not lock out on my second attempt. It was so close. I wanted to try one more time but my shoulders were already in a lot of pain and I didn't want to do anything that would prevent a good workout next Monday.

All in all I am happy with a 25# increase considering the relative brief time I have been training heavy and the set backs I have had with my shoulders. I feel that we have a good base line to judge our progress by and in another couple months we will try it again.

Now Squats on Wednesday!
