Haugen '08

This was the big day. The day that what little training I have been doing over the past year was for. It was A beautiful day for it too, sunny and 75 degrees.
There were eight of us competing this year; A good representation of six from the Chetek H.S. football team, an '08 graduate of Barron H.S. who is in training to play football at U.W. LaCrosse, and me a 34 year old husband and father of four. We were able to have a lightweight class and a heavyweight class. The events were a little different from last year.
Event number one was the axle deadlift-315# for the lightweights, and 385# for the Heavyweights. I was able to do 11 reps for second place in this event.

Next up was the sled load and drag. I have never done a sled drag so this was new territory for me. The sled started empty and the competitors loaded a 65# mounted tire right away. Then you drag it 25' and add an 90# rock. Drag it another 25' and load a 120# keg. And finally drag it across the finish line. The heavyweights started with an extra 45# for a finish total of 315#. I struggled with this event and half way through my legs were mush. I finished in just over 50 seconds for third place here.

Event number three was the tire flip/power stairs medley. The object is to flip a 375# tire five times for LW or six times for HW, and lift a weighted steel box (appx. 120# for HW) up three stairs setting the box on each step. I breezed through this event with a time of 22.75 seconds only to be passed by Joel from Barron at a time of 21.71 seconds. That guy was an animal!

Number four on the schedule was the log press. Power-clean a 150# log as many times as possible in one minute. By this time I was really out of gas and could only get 4 reps for third place in this one.

Last ,and the one I did really poorly on last year, was the truck pull. That consisted of pulling a 7000# truck plus 500# in weight and all of the LW's in the bed for a total of roughly 8200#. This one was also a good event for me this year. I pulled that truck the distance in 17.97 seconds beating my previous personal best of 19.66 seconds. Joel from Barron promptly tied me with 17.97 of his own - That's sick!

At the end of the day I took second place in HW an overall and had a great day doing it. The competition was definitely a couple of notches above last year. I was glad to see that I had what it took to hang in there with guys half my age and actually do quite well.

If you were to ask me right now when the next competition was I might say never! I am sitting in my living room holding a fussy babe, smelling of Icy Hot, and feeling every muscle in my body. Right now I just hope I can get out of bed in the morning. Seriously though, I would like to compete at the Capitol City Strongman event in Madison, WI. I have a lot of training to do in the off season to get to that level, but you never know unless you try.
