When I first started lifting fifteen years ago or so I didn't know much about it. And as I got into it most of my information came from body building. I became well versed in lifting from the body building stand point, but didn't know a thing about power lifting. Fast forward to about five years ago. A couple of friends who were coaches (high school wrestling and basketball) introduced me to the power clean and dead lift. I hated them! That is probably the attitude of 90% of high school athletes. They were new, they were hard, they hurt, it was hard to breathe, etc. I totally wimped out on them.
Fast forward again to today. I love dead lifts. To me the dead lift is the ultimate power lift. And I am liking power cleans. As my old wrestling coach use to say "you might as well do 'em and love 'em" because I have to be good at them.
Last Friday Al and I dead lifted together for the first time in a few weeks. I had the opportunity to dead lift a couple of times in there, but Al had not. I was impressed to see him go for it with 225# for ten then 230# and, I think 235# all for ten reps. That's thirty reps with well over his body weight.
While in Minnesota I was able to lift in a high school weight room and did heavy dead lifts that day. This past Friday it was fun to be back home dead lifting with Al. I stared with 300# for ten reps, and jumped up to 320# for six reps, and finished at 330# for five reps. Looking back I may have been able to do more , but I wasn't sure at the time. This week I plan on really pushing for more.
